Clinical Instructor - Practical Nurse program

Department: Wayne - PN Instruc
Location: Wayne, MI

Supervise, lead, and teach Practical Nurse (PN) students at a “to be determined” Detroit metro area medical facility.


  • Lecture, conduct, and supervise clinical experiences of PN students and provide in-services as directed.
  • Instruct students in the principles and application of physical, biological, and psychological subjects related to the role of the PN as necessary.
  • Plan and coordinate daily learning experiences that individualize both student and patient needs.
  • Provide learning opportunities that enhance student development in the application of the nursing process, interpersonal skills acquisition, and technical procedures.
  • Provide guidance and education to PN students on problem solving and effective communication between co-workers, patients and patient family members across a variety of cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic levels.
  • Participate in campus-wide orientation of PN students.
  • Supervise and monitor students on an ongoing basis as they perform technical and patient care skills.
  • Assess patient status on an ongoing basis to assure appropriate learning experiences.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Nursing and/or Clinical Coordinator to monitor student progress and maintain records of student clinical experiences.
  • Maintain accurate records of students’ time and attendance, evaluations, experiences, performance, and progress.  Report any/all concerns to the Director of Nursing/Clinical Coordinator.
  • Collaborate with each PN student’s campus Career Services Coordinator (CSC) to initiate the job placement process. May act as intermediary between the individual nursing managers, hospital HR department and CSC regarding open PN positions and placements.
  • Consults with the Director of Nursing regarding actions to be taken with students who are in jeopardy and/or whose performance does not meet clinical standards.
  • Collaborates with medical and nursing personnel to evaluate and improve teaching techniques throughout the externship module. Makes recommendations for improvement of the clinical experience.
  • Participates in the development of procedures, clinical protocols, and forms as requested by the Director of Nursing.
  • *Other related tasks as assigned and deemed necessary.


  • Strong background knowledge of hospital and nursing policies, procedures, and standards of care.

  • Afternoon, evening, or weekend hours, if necessary, to meet deadlines.
  • Travel required.


  • Prior experience teaching is preferred, as applicable
  • Practical Nurse Clinical instructors must document and maintain current, unencumbered licensure as a registered nurse (RN) and must hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in nursing science and must possess documented experience related to the course taught. An individual with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) who is actively pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) is qualified to teach in the Practical Nurse program with the EXCEPTION of BIO101, BIO102, and PSY102 (those courses require a bachelor’s degree). Documentation of enrollment in BSN program required. ‘Exception’ paperwork must be filed with the Board of Nursing prior to the instructor teaching. This ‘exception’ is good for two years.
  • All Program Instructors may be individually qualified if and when approved by the Vice President of Education and Career Services or Senior Vice President of Operations and Compliance. Adequate documentation will be required. Written approval via email is required, and a printout of that email must be maintained in the instructor’s binder.


  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to see, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit for extended periods of time, and have sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate a phone, computer keyboard, and other office equipment. Must be able to lift a minimum of 10 pounds.
